Dr. Angela Belcher is the John Chipman Associate Professor of Materials Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading materials scientists. Dr. Belcher’s expertise is in the fields of biomaterials, biomolecular materials, organic-inorganic interfaces and solid-state chemistry. The focus of Dr. Belcher’s research is understanding and using the process by which nature makes materials in order to design novel hybrid organic-inorganic electronic and magnetic materials on new length scales. Her research is interdisciplinary in nature, involving the fields of inorganic chemistry, materials chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and electrical engineering. Dr. Belcher was chosen from among the nation’s premier scientists to lead the US Army’s new $50 million Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies at MIT. Among her awards are the Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering (2000), and the DuPont Young Investigators Award (1999). Dr. Belcher holds a BA in Creative Studies and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California at Santa Barbara. Her work has been featured in Forbes, The New York Times, US News & World Report, MIT Technology Review and many other leading consumer and scientific publications. |
